Kangxi Emperor's Inspection of Southern China

This image is just a fraction of one scroll created during the inspection of southern china conducted by the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing dynasty. The image depicts his travels from the Ji'nan to Mount Tai. The scroll that this image was taken from is just one of 12 that tells the story of the emperor during his travels, and i haven't done the research on the other scrolls, but i liked this image because it seem to have the largest focal point and there seems to be a lot of movement at the base of the mountain scape. There is also that sense of brevity that was mentioned in class with the figures fading in the background. the image along with other images from the scroll, and a more detailed description can be found here. http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/works-of-art/1979.5 I was interested in doing a blog on the hand scroll because i've been fascinated with making one of my own for some time. I would like to do some research on how to make an authentic hand scroll, but i've found a link to a site that give details about how to make a digital image scroll which can be found here http://www.oakhall.org/default.aspx?relid=608550. if anyone is interested in making one then more power to you, and i would love to see how it turns out.

the 6 winged angel in Hagia Sofia

I just did a search on mosaics in the Hagia Sofia, and i came across the image of the six winged angel. I just thought that it was personally eye catching amongst some of the more popular images that came up during my search. In all honesty i think the image is creepy and i'm not sure if it suggests anything pleasant, but i like the idea of the body of the angel being smothered by wings, maybe as if protected. so yea.. i like it.

the grifin fresco

this griffin fresco is an example of Cretan art found in the the palace pf Knossos, Crete.I was a fan of this piece from the get go because of my love for red and the design that went into it. In a way it really reminds me of my own style of drawing because the shapes and patterns within them are freely formed yet the form into the griffin in a natural way. so i thought this piece was very interesting. I couldn't find much information about how the fresco was made, originally i wanted to find out more about fresco buon, but instead i found this piece (c) Mark Cartwright found at http://www.ancient.eu.com/image/392/
