I just did a search on mosaics in the Hagia Sofia, and i came across the image of the six winged angel. I just thought that it was personally eye catching amongst some of the more popular images that came up during my search. In all honesty i think the image is creepy and i'm not sure if it suggests anything pleasant, but i like the idea of the body of the angel being smothered by wings, maybe as if protected. so yea.. i like it.

This piece is likely one of the angels who appear to commission the prophet Isaiah. They had six wings - two covered their faces, two covered their feet and two they used to fly - scary creatures to be sure!
ReplyDeleteSix wings are interesting because normally the symbolic number from God is 7, not 6. Or do I connect numbers and meaning too enforcedly?
